On The Road Again: A Tooth Taxi Update
by Mary Daly, Program Manager, Tooth Taxi
Update Number 37 | 10/1/2009 | Myrtle Creek
After finishing up in Grants Pass we headed northeast to Myrtle Creek to leave the Tooth Taxi for the weekend. Myrtle Creek, situated along the South Umpqua river in Douglas County, is also the birthplace of U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley.
Students were seen from Myrtle Creek Elementary schools, Coffenberry Middle School as well as Canyonville Elementary. At the end of the week Coffenberry Middle School Principal Doug Park and student Andrew Smith stopped by to give us Hornet (their mascot) t-shirts and a thank you card. Myrtle Creek Elementary gave the team Greyhawk (their mascot) shirts as well.

Success Stories:
Tyler, a 13 year old boy had an abscess on a permanent molar with a broken-off crown. We extracted the infected tooth and when we were done he said that the tooth had been aching for a year. It hurt so bad that he had tried to pull it himself but the pain of pulling it was just too much to bear.
A little girl with her Dad arrived for her 8:00 appointment. She’d had a bad experience with a dentist in the past. She didn’t want to come in the Tooth Taxi, screamed and yelled, and refused to come in. The Dad loaded her in the car and left.
Her teacher came out later and talked to Dr. Heringer, the little girl felt really bad, she was really scared. The teacher asked “if there was any way we could still see her?” Dr. Heringer took x-rays, cleaned her teeth, gave her sealants and fluoride varnish. The little girl did fine, she had a positive experience. The success here was the intervention of the teacher.
Treatment was completed on the little girl (Gladys) from Griffin Creek Elementary in Medford who came to us when we were in Ashland via Maurice Hicks, President and OEA Choice Board Member. Dr. Rick Kaufman from Jacksonville-Applegate Rotary brought her to Grants Pass last week and then to Myrtle Creek for her 3rd appointment. All of her dental work has been completed, services provided - $1,362.00

Visitors:
R.N. Mary Berch from the Mercy Foundation in Roseburg visited. Mary is the Health resource nurse for healthy kids outreach program.

From the kid gallery:
Patient- “My brother is coming?” James- “Yeah.” Patient- “Why?” James- “Oh he said he’s got a tooth that’s bothering him.” Patient- “Oh he’s gonna have fun.”
