On The Road Again: A Tooth Taxi Update
by Mary Daly, Program Manager, Tooth Taxi
Update #8 | 10/27/08 | Santiam Canyon
We had a week of glorious weather and gorgeous fall colors in the Santiam Canyon area, treating students from Mill City and Gates schools. Our most unique request for dental services last week was a woman who arrived at the van on horseback to request care. (yes, you read that correctly, a horse).
Volunteer Jim Jobes from OEA Choice Trust helped to escort students between the van and school, while volunteer hygienist, Elizabeth Reeser provided cleanings for students classified as category 1 and 2. With Elizabeth's help we were able to treat all students that had been screened. Elizabeth also provided oral hygiene education to the 5th & 7th graders.
The community gave us a warm welcome: visits from the principal, superintendent and business manager. The Tooth Taxi visit was posted on the schools electronic sign.

Santiam Canyon stats:
- 34 kids screened
- 34 kids treated in the van
- $18,248 free dental treatment provided
- 60 students received classroom oral hygiene education
Next week's news: Lebanon re-cap
Next week on the road: Estacada
Although we've made history this evening with our presidential election, we're out here making our own history - the nurse from Central Linn (Halsey) passed this quote on to us from one of her students, when she asked him if he liked the dentist: "He's a miracle worker."
Regards, Mary
