On The Road Again: A Tooth Taxi Update

by Mary Daly, Program Manager, Tooth Taxi
Update #4 | 09/20/08 | Falls City

Tooth Taxi schedule & volunteers:

I'm writing from the road...the Tooth Taxi team felt really good about the work completed in Falls City last week. It is a very poor area, it reminded me of past volunteer work in the Appalachain mountains of Kentucky. There are only 150 kids in both the elementary and the high school. The school was grateful to have us there, they shared with us what a positive experience the Tooth Taxi was, and how different from when the dental van was just in town for a day. We quickly became a part of their community. If you haven't been to Falls City, it's on the road to nowhere, the closest town is Dallas. Falls City, founded in 1891 was a logging town.

A big thank you to Holly with OEA Choice Trust who managed the Tooth Taxi on Thursday while I was taking care of business in Portland.

Service recap and stats:

  • 39 kids screened and fluoride varnish
  • 15 kids received dental services
  • $14,102 free dental treatment provided

The dental community continues to come forward supporting the Tooth Taxi. Dr. Howerton in Salem will help out with a special needs referral from Falls City. Dr. Weston Heringer III continues to allow his Dad to raid his dental office for supplies.
