Tooth Taxi schedule & volunteers:
Holly Spruance and I met last week to begin mapping out the 2009 Tooth Taxi schedule. We will meet again in Sweet Home to finalize it, but be prepared to see the Tooth Taxi in all corners of the State between January and June 2009. Peggy and I attended the Multnomah ESD meeting yesterday to talk about the Tooth Taxi with the school nurses. We will be visiting one of their schools the week of November 10th.
Service recap and stats:
The Tooth Taxi spent Monday and Tuesday at the Sweet Pea Head Start Preschool in Milwaukie. It was very short notice, but gave Dr. Heringer, Peggy & I, another chance to try out the operation of the program. Many of the children had no cavities! It was the ideal opportunity for oral hygiene education as some of the parents were there and Dr. Heringer worked with them one-on-one.
Patty Peirano, a dentist from Chile works for Head Start in Clackamas County, she worked with us to translate with Spanish speaking children and parents. Patty also translated many of our forms for us.
- 22 kids screened and fluoride varnish
- 6 kids received dental services (some had insurance)
- $2,500 estimated free dental treatment provided
Next Stop:
We are scheduled for Falls City the week of 9/29 Megan Schumaker from the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) will be joining us on Tuesday September 30th in Falls City to see the Tooth Taxi in operation. Karleanne submitted a grant request to the OCF before her departure, so I am thrilled that they called and want to visit us in person.
Regards, Mary
