On The Road Again: A Tooth Taxi Update
by Mary Daly, Program Manager, Tooth Taxi
Update #1 | 09/04/08 | Independence Head Start
Tooth Taxi schedule & volunteers:
I continue to receive calls from schools and Head Start programs about Tooth Taxi visits as well as calls from interested volunteers. For our first week in Sweet Home, we are booked with Dr. Goger as a volunteer dentist, Amy Berg as dental assistant, and a volunteer hygienist will be joining us on Monday. We felt it would be helpful to have one more trial run before our week in Sweet Home; we will be going to a Clackamas county Head Start that contacted us, next Monday and Tuesday 9/15 and 9/16.
Service recap and stats:
The Head Start in Independence was grateful to have the Tooth Taxi visit. They were very organized with the students and paperwork and had plenty of bilingual helpers.
- 17 kids screened and fluoride varnish
- 12 kids received dental services
- $7,000 free dental treatment provided over the course of 2 days.
We had two guests on board - Jason from ADI and Rebecca from DAISY to help troubleshoot with any system or van issues, and they did get a chance to put their skills to use!
We all learned a lot, it was an invaluable journey and has given us a chance to debrief and revise our processes. Other visitors that spent some time with us on Friday: Holly Spruance from the OEA Choice Trust, Helen Halderman from the Falls City School District, and Kathy Bond from Willamette ESD. It is great to be able to share our mission in action and spread the word.
Regards, Mary
