BnK Helps Raise $5,140 for DFO

Bill Ludwig, President of BnK Construction, along with his wife Sherry and extended family hosted a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament at their home in Boring on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Over thirty players joined in the fun and helped raise $5,140 for DFO programs like the Tooth Taxi.

“It was a fantastic evening,” said Charlie LaTourette, DFO’s executive director. “We are very grateful to the Ludwig family and BnK Construction, and all of the sponsors who contributed prizes.”

Heather (Ludwig) Hippenstiel provided super support for the tournament designing fliers, posters and promotional materials and her husband, Darren managed the details of the tournament.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Supports the Tooth Taxi

Ronald McDonald House Charities Supports the Tooth Taxi   The DFO recently received a generous grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Oregon and Southwest Washington (RMHC®) in the amount of $10,000 to provide free oral healthcare to children of low-income families in Oregon.  RMHC partners with nonprofit programs in the community to support efforts to improve children’s health with proper oral healthcare.  These grants are made possible by a portion of proceeds from donation boxes at McDonald’s restaurants in our region, and matching funds from RMHC Global.  Our sincere thanks to RMHC for their outstanding support of the Tooth Taxi.  Read the full press release HERE.

Monte Carlo Night Raises $3,260

Nearly 100 gamblers and friends attended the Monte Carlo Night sponsored by the Clackamas County Dental Society on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 to try their luck at games of chance and raise funds for the Tooth Taxi.

Thanks to the hard work of many people from the Clackamas County Dental Society including Dr. Fred Bremner, executive director and Dr. Robert Russell, CCDS President, as well as Heather Hippenstiel from BnK Construction, Monte Carlo Night was a huge hit raising over $3,260 for The Dental Foundation of Oregon’s Tooth Taxi.

“We are very grateful to the Clackamas County Dental Society for making this event so successful,” said Charlie LaTourette, DFO’s executive director. “Dentists already do a huge amount of charity work in their offices, and they know supporting DFO and programs like the Tooth Taxi allows them to help thousands of underserved children every year.”

Individual gaming tables were sponsored by a number of companies including Artisan Dental Lab, Assured Dental Lab, BnK Construction, Carestream Dental, DBIC, DFF Dental Lab, O’Brien Dental Lab, Pacific Continental Bank and Shikosha Dental Lab.  The delicious hors d’oeuvres were sponsored by Aribex.

The Tooth Taxi Texas Hold’em Poker Tournaments were won by Dr. James Barless and Dr. Donald Nimz , and numerous prizes were handed out to the players including the overall winner, Tara Asai, who although a novice gambler won the iPad 2 for her devastating performance at the Black Jack table.

2011 Chip! Sets Record with 33 Teams

A great time was had by all at Langdon Farms Golf Course on Friday, June 24th, 2011 as a field of 33 teams of golfers enjoyed a day on the course to benefit the Tooth Taxi mobile dental van. Thanks to our generous sponsors and players, over $58,550 was raised to support important DFO programs like the Tooth Taxi.

The day started with early registration and breakfast, sponsored by Willamette Dental. Mitsue Steward, Practice Manager for Willamette Dental, warmly greeted golfers at the breakfast and directed players to “find their swing” at the Columbia Community Bank Driving Range. The group teed off promptly at 7:45 starting at one of the many holes sponsored by a wide range of companies that support dentistry and the DFO.

Low Gross Team

The team of Dr. Rick Asai, Tracy Broder, Dr. Steve Thurn and Carl Asai shot a blistering 57 to win the Low Gross Prize.

Low Net Team

And Andrew Mckechnie, Jared Siegel, Eric Dahm, and Dan Polzin won the Low Net Prize with a score of 53.

Dr. Weston Heringer, Jr., the original Tooth Taxi dentist and DFO board member, spoke during the awards luncheon and described the great work the Tooth Taxi was doing helping underserved children throughout Oregon. He told the story of one patient who was treated on the van, and subsequently was helped by a number of local dentists in the community who provided complex and follow-up care.

DFO Executive Director, Charlie LaTourette, and DFO Board Member, Amy Benson, RDH drew raffle tickets and announced the prizes won by many of the players in the audience. In fact, over $8,000 in prizes were handed out to players during the raffle for exciting prizes including weekend getaways, gift certificates, an Apple Itouch, golf packages, white water rafting trips, theatre tickets and dinner and hotel packages to name a few.

DFO Community Grants Support Statewide Dental Care

The Dental Foundation of Oregon Board of Directors has announced eight 2011 Community Grant Awards to support nonprofit dental programs across Oregon that provide a range of services from direct care to oral health education.

2011 Grantees include the Assistance League of Eugene ($5,000) to support the Children’s Dental Center; Beaverton Rotary Foundation, Inc. ($5,000) to support the Beaverton Dental Check/Dental Aid program; Dental Health Solutions for Children Salem-Keizer Public Schools ($5,000) to oral health education and dental screenings for students and parents in 46 elementary schools; Deschutes County Healthy Beginnings ($4,500) to support free screenings and dental education; Multnomah Dental Society ($2,000) to support their annual Children’s Health Fair; Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center ($2,500) to support the OB Baby Dental Program; A grant was given to Upstream Public Health($10,000) to promote improvements in children’s oral health, and Oregon Mission of Mercy ($10,000) to support the two-day free dental clinic at the Oregon Convention Center to help uninsured families get free dental care and education.

“We are very happy to be able to support these outstanding organizations,” said Dr. Steve Simmons, DFO board member and chair of the DFO Grant Committee. “These grants will help provide critical direct care, oral health education and advocacy for thousands of underserved children.”

Tooth Taxi at the Oregon Dental Conference 2011The Tooth Taxi greeted hundreds of visitors during the dental conference to introduce the mobile dental van program and to encourage more dental professionals to volunteer their time.
