|Hillsboro, South Meadows Middle School, July 6th, 7th and 11th -13th by Carrie Peterson
Team Tooth Taxi made a return visit to the evening migrant program in Hillsboro. This site always keeps us on our toes as treatment hours are short and absenteeism is high. While the overall percentage of treatment needed was down significantly from last year, during the screening process we met a 14 year old that desperately needed our help. When he sat down his face was visibly swollen, he reported that his tooth had been bothering him for a while and had been swollen for at least a week. He had not yet been seen by a dentist and when we brought him aboard the Tooth Taxi an x-ray showed a very infected permanent molar. Dr. Rice and the team were able to get him taken care of quickly and extract the tooth. When he came back later in the week to have some fillings done he was all smiles, feeling so much better than when we first saw him.
During this visit we welcomed first time volunteers Dr. Phil Han and his assistant Emily Stenlund. Both attended high school together in the area and were excited to give back to students in their community. We also had return volunteers Dr. Mark Coussens and Maggie Zandoli. This energetic twosome got to see Dave. It was his first time having any dental work done or being numb and he couldn’t get over how strange his face felt. He kept a smile on his face throughout the entire appointment and was very grateful for the care he received. A couple of hours later there was a knock on our door. It was Dave with a picture of Dr. Coussens he had drawn to thank him for his kindness.
