#20 Friends of the Children
July 20 - 24, 2015 by Carrie Peterson

The Tooth Taxi recently made a return summer trip to Friends of The Children. This unique mentoring program provides the most vulnerable children a nurturing and sustained relationship with a professional mentor who teaches positive values and has attainable expectations for each child to become a healthy, productive member of the community. During our time here we were able to witness the difference this program is making to these children. Mentors did everything from bake cookies with kids, play basketball in the gym, listen to a child read out loud and provide transportation to and from their dental appointments.

We had two teenage sisters who were committed to getting their dental work taken care of. They woke up early four mornings in a row and got themselves to their appointments on the Tooth Taxi. When we completed their treatment and showed them that they had received over $4,300 worth of dental services at no charge to them or their Mom they were extremely grateful and felt good about those early mornings.

Other notes:
67% of students screened needed treatment
33% needed no treatment.

We Believe Every Child Deserves Quality Dental Care

We advocate for increased funding for children's dental treatment and education. We support community water fluoridation, a proven and safe way to reduce cavities, and we encourage volunteerism in the dental community.
