#15 Portland, Sitton Elementary
April 27 - May 1, 2015 by Carrie Peterson

The Tooth Taxi recently spent a week at Sitton Elementary in Portland. When we last visited this school we found that 52% of the children screened needed treatment. During this visit, two years later we noticed a slight increase in need with 58% of the children screened needing treatment.

The students here were excited to have the Tooth Taxi at their school. As our assistant, Becca, would walk through the halls multiple students would see her and say "take me". We also had several kindergarteners for whom this was their first dental visit. As I went to bring a group of them out to the van they were a little nervous about what their visit might entail. As we exited the school and they saw the Tooth Taxi for the first time their reaction was, "whoa, this is so cool!" They were able to come on board and explore. Dr. Tan walked them through the screening process and delivered home care instructions. If x-rays were indicated our other assistant Catherine took the time to explain exactly what she was going to do and answer their questions. A huge part of what we do is not only to provide dental services and education to children who would otherwise not get it, but also to give them a positive dental experience in an environment designed just for them.

We finished up the week by welcoming retired Pedodontist Dr. Patricia Ridgley. We very much enjoyed having her on the Tooth Taxi. Her expertise with young patients was a real asset here and we look forward to having her out with us again soon.
