#36 Portland – Vernon Elementary & Community Transitional School
November 4, 2013 by Mary Daly

At the Tooth Taxi's first visit to Vernon school in NE Portland we screened and treated 17 students.  With Vernon students taken care of we returned to Community Transitional School for our third visit.  There is never a dull moment on the Tooth Taxi; winter weather seemed to arrive with heavy rain and winds which makes for a really loud environment inside the van.  Aaron from Fire Station #14 came to check out our carbon monoxide scare.  With two site partners, new and returning volunteers, and great quotes from the kids, it was a full week.

Volunteers:
Dr. Tochukwu "Tochi" Okeke
Dr. Monisha "Mo" Gagneja
and assistant Lakenda Kersh from Providence Specialty Pediatric Dental Clinic.  Thank you Providence for loaning out your staff!
Dr. Bruce Richardson
Dr. Kevin Prates

Visitors:
Vernon school secretaries Connie Schwendemann and Teresa Walworth who after their tour commented, "This is so fabulous."   Vernon teacher, Jonetta Carter.

From the kid gallery:
"If you don't brush your teeth they turn yellow like pee."
"Monsanto is a really bad chemical for your teeth." 1st grader
"You are lucky to have met me today."
"I'm not happy to be here because I'm missing 30 hours of gym."

Other notes:
Vernon:
53% of students screened needed treatment
47% needed no treatment.
