#24 Fairview
July 15, 2013 by Mary Daly

Lines quickly formed outside the Tooth Taxi as soon as we arrived at Townsend Labor Camp in Fairview for our evening program.  Before we had a chance to set up for treatment patients were eager for a chance to see the dentist.  When Catherine arrived early on Tuesday, workers and families stopped her before she even parked the Tooth Taxi.

We learned the migrant work schedule is unpredictable and often dictated by weather.  Recent dry weather decreased the normally high demand for harvesters; so instead of their usual work in the fields many worked evenings at the nearby cannery.  That prompted us to adjust our schedules to try and see patients before they left for their evening shift.

Medical Teams International (MTI) mobile dental van joined us on Wednesday evening; staffed by volunteers Dr. Larry Jacoby, Mary Lumley RDH and Kirk Vandenhoek from MTI.  They focused on treatment for the adults at the migrant camp. Numerous older patients requested service from the Tooth Taxi throughout the week, but we could not meet the overwhelming need for treatment, even with our focus on youth and young adults.
