#10 Peninsula Elementary
March 4, 2013 by Mary Daly

Peninsula Elementary in North Portland is one of Portland Public Schools VIDA participants. Students receive free vision, dental and audiometric services. This was the Tooth Taxi's first partnering with a VIDA school. Thirteen students signed up for the Tooth Taxi so after wrapping up two days the team went back out on the road.

With only 13 students available for screening,
the Tooth Taxi was able to provide cleanings for everyone (all 13) and treatment for those who needed it. Waiting to be escorted to and from class, students enjoyed reading our dental
books, which were later donated to the school library. Catherine provided oral hygiene education presentations to a large group of kindergartners and an even bigger assembly of 1st and 2nd graders. The teachers assisted to keep the students attentive and focused during the presentation.

From the kid gallery:
When Dr. Moffitt encouraged a student to keep his teeth until he was an old man, the student inquired, "When you are old, can't you take your teeth out?"

Other notes:
38% of students screened needed treatment
62% needed no treatment.
